Top 10 countries with most approved asylum claims in Canada 2025

Canada recorded more than 107,000 asylum claims in 2025, with tens of thousands of applicants seeking protection from a wide range of countries, according to new data.
Figures released by the Immigration and Refugee Board of Canada (IRB), which monitors claims based on applicants’ countries of alleged persecution, show rising demand for asylum alongside a growing backlog of unresolved cases.
What the data shows
Between January and December 2025, a total of 107,802 claims were referred for processing.
Of these, 50,067 were approved, while 14,619 were rejected. The data also recorded 7,944 abandoned cases and 6,832 withdrawn or administratively closed claims, bringing the total number of finalized cases to 79,462.
India had the highest number of rejected claims at 2,309, followed by Mexico (1,836) and Nigeria (1,377). Haiti and Bangladesh also recorded notable rejection figures, with 1,274 and 867 cases respectively.
Top countries with the most approved claims
Haiti – 4,511 claims
Haiti recorded the highest number of approved asylum claims in Canada in 2025, with 4,511 successful applications. Out of 14,192 referred cases, a significant backlog remains, with 29,349 claims still awaiting decisions.
Türkiye – 4,057 claims
Türkiye posted 4,057 approved claims. Data shows 1,337 cases were referred and 227 rejected, while 4,106 claims remain pending.
Nigeria – 3,463 claims
Nigeria recorded 3,463 approved asylum claims out of 6,765 applications. A total of 1,377 claims were rejected, while 21,573 cases are still pending.
Iran – 3,456 claims
Iran saw 3,456 claims approved from 7,114 applications. No rejections were listed, while 11,448 cases remain pending.
Mexico – 3,012 claims
Out of 5,385 applications from Mexico, 3,012 were approved and 1,836 rejected. A large backlog persists, with 24,059 cases pending.
Pakistan – 2,763 claims
Pakistan recorded 2,763 approved claims from 3,650 applications, with 462 rejections and 8,727 pending cases.
Colombia – 2,264 claims
Colombia posted 2,264 approved claims. While 574 were rejected, 8,704 cases are still awaiting decisions.
