The Minister of Education, Dr. Tunji Alausa, has said the achievements recorded by the Rural Electrification Agency (REA) in the past two years surpassed what the agency accomplished cumulatively in the previous decade.

Alausa made the assessment at the launch of the Renewable Asset Management Company (RAMCO), in Abuja at the weekend.

He commended the Managing Director of REA, Abba Aliyu, for what he described as transformational leadership at the agency.

“We are seeing the genius in you, and the way you are managing REA is phenomenal. The proactiveness shown in the last two years exceeds what was achieved in the entire previous decade cumulatively,” the minister said.

He pointed to developments in the education sector as evidence of the impact of REA’s interventions, citing the University of Abuja, where a 3.2MW installation now provides 24-hour electricity to support uninterrupted research.

“We are witnessing a different Nigeria today,” Alausa added.

The minister said reliable electricity was fundamental to improving teaching, research, innovation and the overall experience of students, stressing that renewable energy installations must be properly maintained to sustain their benefits.

According to him, effective management of renewable energy assets requires technical competence, timely replacement of components, continuous monitoring and clear accountability.

Alausa said the establishment of RAMCO marked an important shift from simply deploying renewable energy infrastructure to ensuring that such assets remained functional and sustainable over time.

“The creation of RAMCO represents a necessary transition from simply deploying renewable energy assets to sustainably managing them. We expect RAMCO to bring greater professionalism and accountability to the management of these installations,” he said.

The minister stressed the need for a proactive maintenance approach to ensure that renewable energy assets continue to perform optimally, rather than waiting for them to fail before taking action.
