Otti directs LG chairmen to reconstitute NYSC committees

Abia State Governor, Dr Alex Otti, has directed local government chairmen in the state to immediately reconstitute NYSC Local Government Committees in their respective councils, in line with the provisions of the Act establishing the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC).

Otti gave the directive yesterday in his address at the swearing-in ceremony of the 2026 Batch ‘C’ Stream 1 corps members deployed to Abia State at the NYSC Permanent Orientation Camp, Umunna, Bende Local Government Area.

The governor also directed that the committees should be functional and provide the necessary support to the scheme at the grassroots, particularly in the areas of security and the general welfare of corps members.

“I also call on all Local Government Councils, traditional rulers, opinion leaders, philanthropists and other stakeholders to give full support to corps members undertaking Community Development Service projects.

“Always bear in mind that a renovated classroom, a health awareness programme, or a newly provided or rehabilitated water facility achieved with your support can make a lasting difference in the lives of people in the benefiting communities,” Otti said.

The governor said the national service remained an important instrument of national integration, providing young Nigerians from different backgrounds the opportunity to live, work and learn together.

“I therefore expect each of you to contribute meaningfully to the development of your host communities and to leave a positive mark wherever you are posted,” he said.

Otti urged the corps members to approach the programme with discipline, commitment, humility and a willingness to learn.

“Your service will not be measured only by its successful completion, but also by the impact you make, the relationships you build and the skills you acquire along the way,” he said.

He assured corps members serving in the state of his administration’s commitment to their welfare, noting that this informed the commencement of payment of the enhanced state allowance and the rehabilitation of the permanent orientation camp.

The governor also encouraged the corps members to take full advantage of the NYSC Skills Acquisition and Entrepreneurship Development (SAED) programme, which is designed to empower participants for self-employment and wealth creation.

The Commissioner for Sports and Youth Development and Chairman, NYSC Abia State Governing Board, Nwaobilor Ananaba, assured the corps members that the administration remained committed to their welfare and security.

Ananaba expressed optimism that their service year in the state would be one of growth, purpose and lasting impact.

The NYSC Abia State Coordinator, Alhaji Yunusa Tanimu, said the activities lined up for the corps members had definite purposes, adding that the experiences they would gain at the camp would provide a foundation for the responsibilities awaiting them at their places of primary assignment and in their host communities.
