SENSE OR RUBBISH:- So If Artiste No Prostrate “Dobale” For OAU Students – E No Go Perform?

It’s been over 10 years, and the tradition still holds strong — if an artiste is performing at Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), they must prostrate before the students. Yes, “Dobale” — right there on stage.
From Wizkid in 2014, who famously bowed before his performance at Oduduwa Hall, to more recent names like Laycon in 2021, Zinoleesky in 2022, and now TML Vibez in 2025, this act has become a cultural norm in OAU.
Ayo Maff also Dobale in his last visit to OAU;
But the big question today is: Is this a sign of respect or just plain rubbish?
OAU is known for its deep roots in Yoruba tradition and student activism. Among the many unspoken rules is that artists must prostrate to the students before performing, at venues like Oduduwa Hall.
The tradition is largely upheld the popular “Awo Boys”, and is seen as a way of showing respect to the student body.
Recently, rising star TML Vibez reportedly faced heavy backlash from students after initially refusing to prostrate before his performance.
In a viral video, it was shown that he was called out, delayed, and eventually pressured into complying.
The situation raised eyebrows — not just for the way it played out, but for what it means moving forward.
Let’s be real — respect is important. In Yoruba culture, especially in places like Ile-Ife, prostrating is a traditional sign of humility and honor.
But when artists are forced to do it or embarrassed publicly if they refuse, it becomes a problem. And more importantly — should artists be treated as guests or servants?
What do you think
Should Artists Be Required To Prostrate Before OAU Students Or Not?
