Scores missing as collapsed mining pit claims 13 lives in Zamfara

The collapse of a mining site in Kadauri village, Maru Local Government Area, Zamfara State, has claimed lives with the recovery of 13 bodies, while others are still missing.
A source in the area told DAILY POST that he was among those fortunate to survive when the incident happened.
He said, “l was digging for gold in the pit on Thursday when l stepped out to drink water because l was feeling thirsty and immediately l came out, the mining pit suddenly collapsed with some of my colleagues inside.”
He stated that other miners rushed to the scene to rescue those trapped underground, explaining that the pit collapsed and buried more than 30 persons inside.
According to him, eleven dead bodies were evacuated, while several others are yet to be recovered from the pit.
Reports have it that over 100 miners were in the pit during the collapse.
Fifteen persons were rescued alive and are currently receiving treatment in a hospital following various degrees of injuries they sustained.
Muhammadu Isa, an official of the Zamfara State Miners Association, confirmed the incident.
Yazid Abubakar, the State Police spokesman, could not be reached to comment on the incident.
