“Nigeria Has No Business With Nuclear Weapons, Our War Is Against Poverty” – Tinubu Government Tells International Community.

The Federal Government of Nigeria has reaffirmed its commitment to global peace and disarmament, stating categorically that Nigeria has no interest in acquiring or developing nuclear weapons. This declaration was made by representatives of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration in response to rising global concerns about nuclear proliferation in volatile regions.

Speaking at a high-level diplomatic forum organized by the United Nations Office for Disarmament Affairs (UNODA), Nigeria’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Yusuf Tuggar, emphasized that the country’s priority remains tackling poverty, insecurity, and underdevelopment.
“Nigeria has no business with nuclear weapons,” Tuggar said. “Our war is not against nations but against poverty, hunger, and inequality. We are committed to the peaceful use of nuclear energy strictly for medical, agricultural, and energy development.”
The Tinubu-led administration reiterated its support for all international treaties that seek to prevent the spread of nuclear arms, including the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons (NPT), of which Nigeria is a signatory.
The statement aligns with President Tinubu’s broader foreign policy direction, which advocates for African development through peace, economic cooperation, and sustainable security. The government also called on wealthier nations to redirect global defense spending toward solving the root causes of conflict—poverty, climate change, and poor education.
The Nigerian government assured the international community of its continued transparency in nuclear-related programs, especially through its collaboration with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA).
This firm stance is expected to strengthen Nigeria’s diplomatic reputation as a responsible regional power committed to peace and development.
