The Nigerian Breweries (NB) Plc on Tuesday flagged off the 11th edition of the 2025 Maltina Teachers Award with a promise to surpass previous editions in terms of nationwide entries.

The NB announced an upgrade of prizes, the 1st runner-up would receive N6 million as against N3 million, and the 2nd runner-up to receive N3 million from N2.5 million, while the national winner and state champions’ prizes remain N10 million.

Organisers ruled out the inclusion of primary school teachers in the current edition of the competition as canvassed by the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT).

Flagging off the competition, the Managing Director of Nigerian Breweries Plc, Hans Essaadi, disclosed that stakeholders acknowledged the competition has made a positive impact on teachers since its inception in 2015.

Essaadi, who was represented by the new Director of Corporate Affairs, Uzodinma Odenigbo, said the competition under the Felix Oheweri Education Trust Fund will kick off on June 24th, and the entries will close August 22nd.

According to him, since the inception of the award in 2015, the Nigerian Breweries Plc has celebrated 287 teachers, and 10 outstanding teachers emerged as national champions.

Essaadi commended the NUT, Teachers Registration Council of Nigeria (TRCN), All Nigeria Conference of Principals of Secondary Schools (ANCOPSS) and corporate organisations for supporting the initiative, which has made the award popular.

In her speech, the Marketing Director of NB Plc, Sarah Agha, acknowledged that teachers play the role of shaping the future of Nigerian children and will continue to sponsor the Maltina Teachers Award.

She explained that the 2025 edition would surpass last year’s award with the highest entries.

In a keynote address, the Corporate Affairs Director, Odenigbo, said the award has made an impact on the education sector and that NB Plc will continue to raise the bar in subsequent awards.

Odenigbo said that since 2015, the initiative has grown and also impacted Nigerian teachers. He appreciated stakeholders for supporting the teachers award.

The Sustainability Manager of NB Plc, Seyi Olokun, revealed that the Felix Oheweri Education Trust Fund took off with a grant of N100million and in 2015, it intervened in the teachers’ award.

Olokun noted that since the inception of the award, over 9,700 teachers submitted entries and over 6,000 were qualified for the competition, adding, “Last year, Lagos State recorded the highest with 163 entries, followed by Kaduna State with 152.

Chairman of NUT Lagos State Council, Mr. Akintoye Hassan, said Nigerian teachers are excited about being celebrated by the Nigerian Breweries Plc and lauded the success recorded in last year’s award.

He disclosed that the Felix Oheweri Education Trust Fund has raised the status and profile of Nigerian teachers in Africa and globally.

Hassan sought the inclusion of primary teachers in the competition, noting, “Primary school teachers can compete favourably with their secondary school counterparts. We will do everything to ensure the patronage of teachers nationwide.”

The President of ANCOPSS Lagos State, Olusola Masheyi, acknowledged that Felix Oheweri Education Trust has changed the face of Nigerian teachers and pledged to continue to support the award.

His words: “We will double the number of teacher entries from Lagos State, and we hope to win the 2025 edition of the teachers award.”

In her goodwill message, the Lagos State Coordinator of TRCN, Princess Adaobi Ekwuno, confirmed that the Maltina teachers award has become a source of hope for Nigerian teachers, adding, “TRCN will continue to support the teachers award.”

Ekwuno further stressed that the trust fund has helped to change the narrative that teachers’ reward is now on earth.
