NANS urges swift action on nation’s security crisis

The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has called for immediate, decisive, and coordinated action to tackle Nigeria’s security crisis.

Mr Olatunji Adejuwon, Assistant Secretary-General, NANS, made the call in a statement to newsmen on Sunday in Ibadan.

He said the wave of banditry, kidnapping, and violent killings across the country had become a national emergency, threatening stability, productivity, and social cohesion.

Adejuwon described kidnapping for ransom as an organised criminal enterprise operating with “alarming boldness,” noting attacks on communities and highway travellers in broad daylight.

He said farmers were driven from their lands, schools disrupted, and rural economies crippled, leaving families in constant fear.

“The normalisation of these tragedies is unacceptable and must be forcefully resisted,” he said.

Although security agencies report arrests and occasional rescues, Adejuwon said the persistence of crime indicates systemic gaps that require urgent reform.

“Reactive measures alone will not suffice. A comprehensive, intelligence-driven, technology-supported strategy is needed to dismantle criminal networks at their roots,” he said.

He cited recent kidnappings in Kwara and killings in Oyo as reminders that no region is immune, warning that complacency emboldens criminals.

Adejuwon urged the Federal Government to intensify security reforms by strengthening intelligence, modernising surveillance, and improving border security.

He also called for adequate equipment and motivation for security personnel to enhance operational effectiveness.

The NANS official appealed to state governments to support federal efforts by boosting community intelligence and lawful local security initiatives.

“Security is a shared constitutional responsibility. Governors must provide logistical support and foster collaboration among traditional rulers, communities, and law enforcement,” he said.

He stressed that patriotic leadership and unified national resolve are needed, emphasising that every Nigerian life is valuable and deserves protection.

Adejuwon said restoring public confidence in security institutions must remain a priority.

“The urgency of this moment cannot be overstated. The time to act is now,” he said.
