Maiduguri Bomb Attack: Nigeria must never return to dark days – CNG warns

The Coalition of Northern Groups, CNG, has vehemently denounced the lethal bomb attacks in Maiduguri, cautioning that Nigeria must not regress into a period characterised by terrorism, fear, and widespread killings.

The explosions reportedly took place at the entrance of the University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital, as well as in the areas of the Monday Market and Post Office, disrupting what the group referred to as a fragile peace that has been gradually restored after years of insurgency in the North-East.

“These attacks are not only atrocious and irrational, but they also signify a perilous indication that forces of terror are once again challenging the determination of our nation,” the Coalition stated in a release by its National Coordinator, Jamilu Aliyu Charanchi.

The group characterised the coordinated explosions as “barbaric and cowardly,” emphasizing that the attacks were not only heinous but also a concerning sign that terrorist factions are once again testing the nation’s resolve.

Charanchi remarked, “Let it be made unequivocally clear that Nigeria must never, and will never, revert to the dark times of bomb blasts, fear, and mass killings. Never again!

“These reprehensible acts are not merely an assault on innocent lives but a direct attack on our shared humanity, our national stability, and the fragile peace that the residents of Maiduguri and indeed the entire North-East have diligently worked to restore.”

The group extended its condolences to the families of the victims, the government and citizens of Borno State, and the Shehu of Borno, whose territory has once again been plunged into mourning. It also offered prayers for the swift recovery of those injured in the explosions.

The coalition urged the Federal Government, the Borno State Government, and security agencies to take immediate and decisive action, calling for them to move beyond standard responses and effectively address the renewed threat.

CNG expressed its concerns over the renewed activities of Boko Haram in certain areas of the North-East, cautioning that this resurgence coincides with the contentious deployment of foreign troops in the region.

Charanchi stated, “The CNG is profoundly troubled by the resurgence of Boko Haram-related activities in parts of the North-East, which aligns with the controversial deployment of American troops in the vicinity. We have opposed such deployment from the very beginning.

“We reiterate our stance that Nigeria possesses the capability and institutional strength to address its security challenges independently, without depending on foreign troops, whose presence could exacerbate the situation.

“The Federal Government must promptly reassess this strategy and ensure that all security measures are grounded in national interest, accountability, and transparency.

“CNG also reiterates its appeal to the Government and security agencies to enhance efforts in identifying and effectively addressing the sponsors and financiers of terrorism. Those who finance and perpetuate terror must no longer operate with impunity; they must be tracked down, prosecuted, and dealt with severely, without fear or favour, irrespective of their status or connections.

“In a time when innocent citizens are being killed and communities are once again engulfed in fear, the presence, leadership, and command responsibility of the President at home is not merely optional but essential.

“The resurgence of such attacks serves as a painful reminder that while terrorism has been diminished, it has not been entirely eradicated. It necessitates a renewed strategy, enhanced intelligence coordination, and visible leadership at all levels to ensure its permanent elimination.

“The residents of Maiduguri, North-East, and indeed the entire nation have suffered too much pain and loss over the years. We cannot be compelled to relive those dark days once more. Nigeria must not be driven backwards.”
