At least eight people lost their lives in a tragic accident on the Lagos-Badagry Expressway, sparking widespread outrage and concern among commuters and residents.

The fatal crash, which occurred on Sunday evening, involved a commercial bus and a heavy-duty truck.Eyewitnesses at the scene have attributed the cause of the accident to a military checkpoint, alleging that soldiers stationed there were extorting money from drivers.

According to multiple accounts, the commercial vehicle was forced to make a dangerous stop near the checkpoint, which led to the deadly collision.“

The soldiers have turned the road into a toll point,” one eyewitness said. “Drivers are often forced to brake suddenly or take unsafe routes to avoid paying bribes.”

The identities of the deceased are yet to be officially confirmed by authorities, though emergency responders were seen evacuating victims and clearing the scene. Several others sustained varying degrees of injuries and have been taken to nearby hospitals for treatment.

Community leaders and civil society organizations have called for an immediate investigation into the incident and a review of military presence along civilian highways.This tragic incident has once again highlighted the dangers posed by illegal checkpoints and the urgent need for reform in road traffic and security operations.
