In a historic move toward greater inclusivity, the House of Representatives is proposing the reservation of 82 seats in the National Assembly for women and persons with disabilities (PWDs) as part of ongoing constitutional amendment efforts.

The proposed allocation includes 55 reserved seats in the House of Representatives and 27 in the Senate, with the goal of enhancing representation for marginalized groups in the country’s legislative process.

Lawmakers say the measure aims to address the longstanding underrepresentation of women and PWDs in Nigerian politics, ensuring that these groups have a stronger voice in national decision-making.

If passed, the amendment will mark a significant milestone in Nigeria’s democratic journey, potentially reshaping the country’s political landscape and aligning with global best practices for inclusive governance.

Further consultations and public hearings are expected as the proposal moves through the legislative process.
