Having watched Tyler Perry’s movie “Straw” during my free time, I observed a striking similarity with “Breaking” by Abi Damaris Corbin and Kwame Kwei-Armah, which raises concerns about potential copyright infringement. “Breaking” is a powerful retelling of the true story of an Iraq war veteran whose disability cheque was unjustly withheld.
In contrast, Tyler Perry’s “Straw” seems to mirror the same storyline, with the main difference being a gender-switched lead character. The plot, characterization, incidents, and specific scenes appear almost replicated, giving “Straw” the feel of a padded reinterpretation rather than an original work. Although both movies are emotionally compelling and well-acted, the originality of “Straw” is questionable, as it seems to be crossing a creative line.
