Gambia Declares Mpox Outbreak Following Detection of First Case

The Ministry of Health of The Gambia has officially declared an outbreak of mpox (formerly known as monkeypox) following the detection of a confirmed case within the country.

The announcement comes amid a recent surge in mpox infections reported in several neighboring West African nations.The confirmed case marks the first detected mpox infection in The Gambia and has triggered an immediate response from public health authorities. Surveillance and contact tracing efforts have been launched to contain any potential spread and to ensure timely medical intervention.
In a statement, health officials assured the public that all necessary measures are being implemented in line with international health protocols.
These include:
Isolation of the confirmed case, Identification and monitoring of all known contacts, Enhanced community awareness and public health education.
“The declaration of this outbreak is a proactive step to ensure we stay ahead of the situation,” said a representative of the Ministry.
“We urge the public to remain calm but vigilant, and to report any symptoms such as rashes, fever, or swollen lymph nodes.”Mpox is a viral zoonotic disease primarily transmitted through close contact with infected individuals or animals. While generally less severe than smallpox, it can lead to significant health complications if left untreated.
