Former Lagos Deputy Governor Kofo Bucknor-Akerele Criticizes Tinubu’s 2027 Re-Election Bid

A former Deputy Governor of Lagos State, Senator Kofo Bucknor-Akerele, has described President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s reported re-election ambition for 2027 as a misplaced priority, considering the numerous challenges currently facing the country.Bucknor-Akerele, who served as Deputy to then-Governor Tinubu between May 1999 and December 2002, made the remarks in a statement on Wednesday. She emphasized that the focus of leadership at this time should be on stabilizing the economy, addressing insecurity, and improving the living conditions of Nigerians, rather than early politicking.

“It is deeply troubling that discussions around a 2027 re-election bid are emerging when the country is grappling with soaring inflation, widespread unemployment, and declining public confidence,” she said. The former deputy governor, who parted ways politically with Tinubu before the end of their term together, noted that the people of Nigeria deserve “serious governance, not premature political scheming.”
President Tinubu, who assumed office in May 2023, has not formally declared his intent to seek re-election. However, key allies and political figures within the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) have hinted at a second-term agenda, sparking national debate.Bucknor-Akerele urged Nigerians to remain vigilant and hold leaders accountable, saying, “Nigeria cannot afford another cycle of political distraction at the expense of national development.”
