EbonyLife Films to adapt The Secret Lives of Baba Segi’s Wives for cinema release in December 2026

Mo Abudu‘s EbonyLife Films is set to bring The Secret Lives of Baba Segi’s Wives, the acclaimed novel by Lola Shoneyin, to the big screen, with the film scheduled for a tentative cinema release in December 2026.
The adaptation is based on Shoneyin’s 2010 novel of the same title, which explores power, rivalry, secrecy, and gender politics within a polygamous household. The story centres on Baba Segi, a wealthy patriarch whose carefully balanced home begins to unravel following the arrival of a new, educated wife.
The film is being produced by EbonyLife Films in partnership with Nile Media Entertainment, Genesis Group, and Silverbird Group. Lola Shoneyin, the author of the original novel, is attached to the project as a producer.
The screenplay is adapted by Adze Ugah, while Daniel Oriahi is directing the film. Further production details, including filming timelines and distribution plans, have not yet been disclosed.
A strong ensemble cast has been announced for the project. The lineup includes Iyabo Ojo, Bimbo Ademoye, Mercy Aigbe, Omowunmi Dada, Bisola Aiyeola, Bolaji Ogunmola, and Daniel Etim Effiong, among others. The casting brings together established Nollywood veterans and contemporary stars, signalling a high-profile theatrical release.
Since its publication, The Secret Lives of Baba Segi’s Wives has gained international recognition, earning literary awards and wide critical praise for its sharp social commentary and layered portrayal of marriage, fertility, and female agency. The film adaptation adds to the growing number of Nigerian literary works being reimagined for the screen.
With its December 2026 release window, the film is expected to be one of the major Nigerian cinema releases of that year.
