Drunken Zambian Policeman Releases 13 Suspects to Celebrate New Year, Sparks Manhunt.
In a bizarre incident in Zambia, a police officer was arrested for freeing 13 suspects from custody on New Year’s Eve, allowing them to celebrate the holiday. Detective Inspector Titus Phiri, stationed at the Leonard Cheelo police station in Lusaka, reportedly seized the keys to the cells from a fellow officer while inebriated. He then unlocked both male and female cells, instructing the detainees to leave and enjoy the New Year festivities.
The suspects, who were facing serious charges including assault, robbery, and burglary, took advantage of the situation and escaped. Out of the 15 individuals in custody at the time, 13 managed to flee, while two remained behind bars. Following the incident, Phiri fled the scene but was later apprehended by authorities. A manhunt has been launched to recapture the escaped detainees.
Police spokesperson Rae Hamoonga confirmed the details of the incident, stating that Phiri’s actions were unacceptable and did not reflect the values of the Zambia Police Service. He assured the public that investigations are underway and that disciplinary measures would be taken against the officer involved.
The incident has sparked a mix of humor and outrage among the public. Former presidential spokesperson Dickson Jere commented on social media, finding the situation amusing but also recalling a similar event from 1997 when a judge ordered the release of 53 suspects due to delays in their court appearances. This latest occurrence has raised concerns about accountability within the police force and the integrity of law enforcement in Zambia.
