The Lagos State Government has emphasized the need for collective responsibility among students, teachers, parents, and communities in building a resilient and sustainable environment.

Permanent Secretary, Office of Environmental Services, Omobilaji Gaji, and Director of the Environmental Education Unit, Mrs. Monsurat Banire, made the remarks at the 2025 Annual Environmental Bees Club (EBC) Members Sensitization Programme in Ikeja, organized by the Ministry of the Environment and Water Resources.

Gaji described the program as a beacon of hope in the state’s efforts to foster a cleaner and sustainable environment. He highlighted the pivotal role of youth as agents of environmental change.

“Environmental sensitization is not merely about sharing information; it is about transforming mindsets and inspiring action,” Gaji said. “The Environmental Bees Club recognizes the power of young people as agents of change, engaging them in hands-on projects and educational activities to build a generation that will protect the earth.”

He added that the Eco-Winner Sustainability Tour encourages students to demonstrate environmental commitment, rewarding excellence and innovation. Gaji also commended EBC teachers for bridging policy and practice.

Banire expressed satisfaction in addressing a gathering of young environmental stewards, noting that this year’s program brought together all six Education Districts for wider participation.

“The interactive sessions, led by environmental experts, cover climate change adaptation, waste reduction, biodiversity conservation, and sustainable lifestyle practices,” she said. “Youth will not only learn but also be inspired to act in their schools and communities.”

Both officials stressed that government alone cannot achieve sustainability; it requires active participation from all sectors of society. Students were urged to translate their learning into action, from planting trees to saving energy and educating peers, ensuring that sustainability becomes a way of life in Lagos.
