Senate President Godswill Akpabio has cautioned Nigerians against placing undue hope in political coalitions, describing such arrangements as unrealistic within Nigeria’s current electoral framework.

Speaking during the House of Representatives Open Week held in Abuja, Akpabio emphasized that only registered political parties are constitutionally and legally recognized to field candidates for elections. According to him, individuals or informal coalitions lack the legal standing to contest or drive electoral change on their own.

“Let us not deceive ourselves — in Nigeria, it is only political parties that are allowed by law to sponsor candidates. Coalitions and independent movements, no matter how popular, are not recognized in the eyes of the law,” Akpabio stated.

He urged Nigerians to channel their political energies through established political structures rather than hoping for reforms through loosely organized alliances that have no legal status under the Constitution.

Akpabio’s remarks come amid growing public interest in coalition movements seeking to challenge mainstream political dominance ahead of the 2027 general elections.
