FIFA has published its final world rankings ahead of the 2026 World Cup, offering a snapshot of where African football and countries stands just months before the tournament kicks off across the United States, Canada, and Mexico.

The latest update, released on April 1, reflects both progress and missed opportunities for the continent. Africa will send a record 10 teams to the expanded tournament, yet some of its biggest names—including Super Eagles—will not be part of the global showpiece.

Leading the way is Morocco, ranked eighth in the world and the only African nation in the top 10. Their position underscores years of steady growth since their historic semi-final run at the 2022 World Cup, and they head into 2026 as the continent’s standard-bearers following another strong result against Paraguay.

Senegal remain Africa’s second-best side despite slipping slightly in the rankings. The former continental champions continue to rely on a core group that delivered the 2022 Africa Cup of Nations title and are widely viewed as one of the continent’s most balanced teams heading into the tournament.

In third place on the continent sit Nigeria, ranked 26th globally. Despite an impressive AFCON 2025 campaign and consistent performances, their failure to secure World Cup qualification remains a major talking point. A recent 2-2 draw with Jordan did little to change their standing, highlighting the gap between ranking strength and tournament participation.

Algeria and Egypt follow closely behind in fourth and fifth, separated by just over a single ranking point. Algeria’s position comes despite a disappointing AFCON outing, while Egypt’s slight rise was boosted by a resilient draw against Spain, a result that has lifted confidence within the squad.

Further down, Côte d’Ivoire continue their upward trajectory after recent positive results, carrying momentum as they prepare for their first World Cup appearance in over a decade. Tunisia and Cameroon remain closely matched, both maintaining their reputations as experienced and competitive sides on the global stage.

DR Congo, who denied Nigeria a place at the tournament, enter the rankings just behind Cameroon after securing qualification through the intercontinental play-offs. Mali complete Africa’s top 10, continuing their steady rise as one of the continent’s most promising teams.
