President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has made a compelling call for global climate justice at the ongoing BRICS Summit, stressing that Africa, despite contributing the least to global greenhouse gas emissions, bears the brunt of the climate crisis.

Addressing world leaders and stakeholders at the high-level gathering, President Tinubu emphasized the urgent need for a fair and equitable climate deal that recognizes the disproportionate impact of environmental degradation on African nations. He urged developed countries and major emitters to increase their commitments toward climate financing, technology transfer, and capacity building for vulnerable regions.

“Africa emits less than 4% of global greenhouse gases, yet we face the harshest consequences — from severe droughts and flooding to desertification and food insecurity,” Tinubu stated. “We demand fairness, not sympathy. Africa needs a seat at the table where decisions about our planet’s future are being made.”

The Nigerian leader also highlighted ongoing efforts by his administration to implement green energy solutions, tackle deforestation, and support sustainable agricultural practices, but noted that global cooperation and investment are essential to scale these initiatives. As BRICS nations continue deliberations on climate action, President Tinubu’s message resonated with calls from other Global South leaders for a just transition, climate reparations, and stronger representation of developing economies in global environmental governance.
