As political activities intensify ahead of the 2027 general elections, the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) and the emerging opposition coalition led by the African Democratic Congress (ADC) are making aggressive moves to secure the crucial 5.7 million votes in Kano State.

Kano, Nigeria’s most populous state in the North, has become a strategic battleground for both parties, with political analysts pointing to its potential to swing the presidential election.

At the heart of the unfolding power tussle is former governor Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, a dominant political figure in the state and leader of the influential Kwankwasiyya Movement. His political clout and grassroots appeal remain unmatched in the region, making him a key factor in the 2027 electoral equation.

Multiple party stakeholders acknowledge that Kano’s massive voting population and Kwankwaso’s influence will be pivotal to determining the next occupant of Aso Rock.

While the APC aims to consolidate its support base in the state, the ADC-led opposition bloc is keen on leveraging Kwankwaso’s network and loyal base to mount a formidable challenge to President Bola Tinubu’s re-election bid.

With realignments and negotiations ongoing behind closed doors, Kano is set to play a kingmaker role once again in shaping Nigeria’s political future.
