The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has unveiled a new licensing framework aimed at driving innovation and opening up greater opportunities for startups and tech-based enterprises within the nation’s rapidly evolving telecommunications sector.

The initiative, which aligns with the Federal Government’s digital economy agenda, is set to create an enabling environment for emerging technologies to thrive, while also encouraging investment, job creation, and increased local content participation.

Speaking during the unveiling, the Executive Vice Chairman of the NCC, Dr. Aminu Maida, emphasized that the framework was developed after extensive consultations with industry stakeholders, and is tailored to accommodate the dynamic nature of digital innovation.β€œOur goal is to remove traditional bottlenecks, stimulate healthy competition, and provide a platform for new entrants and innovators to contribute meaningfully to the sector’s growth,” Dr. Maida stated.

He further explained that the new regime introduces flexible licensing categories, simplified application processes, and incentives for young entrepreneurs and startups developing telecom-related solutions.The NCC reaffirmed its commitment to transparency, inclusiveness, and support for local technology ecosystems, while ensuring that regulatory standards are upheld for consumer protection and service quality.

This strategic move is expected to position Nigeria as a regional hub for telecom innovation and solidify its leadership in Africa’s digital transformation journey.
