The camp of the Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has fired back at the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, following his recent comment describing Obi as a “social media president.”

Supporters of the former Anambra State governor, known as the Obidients, took to various platforms to condemn Wike’s remark, calling it disrespectful and dismissive of the millions of Nigerians who voted for Obi in the last general election.

In a series of reactions, members of the Labour Party insisted that Obi’s popularity transcends social media, pointing to his influence in shaping national conversations on governance, transparency, and youth participation in politics.

Wike, during a recent public appearance, had mocked politicians who “only trend online without grassroots structure,” a veiled jab many interpreted as directed at Obi.

Political observers say the exchange underscores the growing tension between the Labour Party movement and elements within the ruling class who view Obi’s rising influence as a continuing political threat.
